What genre have we chosen?
CRIME THRILLER
The
genre we have chosen is thriller/crime. There are many conventions to the genre thriller including a story line that will usually include murdering, knifes and shooting. The main element to a thriller film is usually death
whether that be by murder or a crime scene. There is often the use of blood
throughout scenes after attacks or deaths. As well as a lot of jump scares that
help to build up tension and unnerve the audience. Most thriller will end either
at the one film but sometimes sequels will be made.
Throughout a thriller other sub genres will often be featured throughout such as:
- Psychological Thriller, such as Orphan
- Political Thriller such as, V for Vendetta
- Techno Thriller, such as Jurassic Park
- Spy Thriller, such as Skyfall
- Crime Thriller such as Nerve
Mise
en scene within the genre of thriller includes setting, props, costume, lighting.
For setting you’ll find that stereo-typically it is set in a an abandoned area or a dark gloomy location sometimes set in a city, like in the film, The Dark Knight or a dangerous area.
The props you’ll find within a thriller usually consist of weapons such as knifes and guns, also typically masks are worn to hide the identity of certain characters.
Costumes within thrillers often consist of full coverage of faces of the villain in order to create enigma and tension for the audience. Majority of costumes worn are dark coloured to add to the fact that the character has a dark soul or in a victim’s case, they may be in danger.
The lighting for a typical thriller is normally quite dark to again add some enigma and also to cover up the fact that is danger within a scene. This is mainly used to help create tension.
Iconography is where you expect to see certain objects on the screen depending on the genre. The iconography of a thriller film usually includes ‘normal’ objectives with the use of a dark setting. In a thriller it is common to ‘shoot through things’ this would be like taking a shot through a door way. There is also the use of haze or fog to create a mysterious and add texture to the scene.
The conventions of a thriller include, some sort of investigation based around the enigma, violence, the solution is usually rational rather than supernatural, it will often include dark lighting, quick cuts, music that creates tension, shadows, diegetic sound (usually of heavy breathing or heartbeat) and often the storyline will be made life like, making the audience believe it could potentially happen to them.
You really must try to formalise your language when writing. 'Murdering, knifes (knives) and shooting are not really conventions whereas death, violence and crime are! A 'dodgy' area would be better described as dangerous etc What are 'normal objectives'? You've dealt with some of this stuff in your earlier posts so you might be better served getting on with your planning now!
