Dark knight
textual analysis
The most common
conventions for all film opening usually all include introducing the narrative, displaying
the production
company, title,
credits and music or theme tune played.
In the Dark Knight there is not a title displayed within the first two minute. As soon as the opening of the film
comes on there is the Warner Brothers displayed with the sound of thunder over the top and then
the Batman symbol comes on screen and appears (in blue flames) and the audience is can recognise
that this is Batman therefore making it easier for them to identify what the film will be based upon and get a
general feel to how it will be, it also gives the narrative/genre away. It starts off with a bang when the scene of
the tower is shown and it slows zooms in towards the building which puts people on edge especially Americans
due to past events. Followed by a long shot of the city to emphasise the busy American city with still no use of
sounds or any dialogue placed init giving the impression the city is cold and lonely with the people living there
yet also gives an unwelcoming effect that it isn't safe or that something is waiting to go wrong. In the opening
we are introduced to the character's personality in some kind of way: we are able to gain knowledge from their
first appearance because they are shooting people who have no reason to be harmed in our point of view and
our way of seeing it as an audience. It is known to be unusual that the title and music are both not shown in
the opening of this film as it one of the most key conventions in film openings yet neither of them are brought to
the opening of the two minutes. When the car pulls up for one of the 'jokers' music appears and gives a sound t
track that gives off a ticking sound like a time bomb down to something. There is heavy usage of props, like
guns and masks the whole way through to relate back to the facts their identities are hidden however people are
just in the scene with not as much focus do not have these weapons. Also by all of the clown masked actors
are dressed in the same attire gives off that they are all part of a 'gang' and the same team. The shots used
within the opening are mainly cuts in order to take us through the different steps and places where they are
preparing for the robbery. The only character properly introduced in the opening is known was the 'joker'.

There's a lot more going on with this film opening than you've covered here Olivia. How is the Joker introduced? Why no opening titles? Be very careful how you express yourself as your expression is a little clumsy in places. Do you think narrative is established before we see the company names as this is what you've implied here.
