Marketing and Social Media

                  Marketing - Social Media

Social media is now the main way of advertising and marketing things such as films, trailers and clips of films

due to such a wide vast audience that comes with it. The majority of people have an account of some sort of

social media site whether that be Facebook, Twitter or even just Whats app. Viral advertisement is something

all of these social media sites give us the opportunity to do which people constantly liking and sharing posts

and videos.

One of the largest advantages of having social media for advertising is the number of people you can reach for

free. Advertising is an expensive business but if you can rely on people posting and re tweeting links to your

product, which can be done of both Facebook and Twitter then it's extremely an effective outcome. You can

also use banner/viral advertising on these sites as well, which will guarantee that it will be seen by millions! This

is basically advertising in an advertisement itself.

Twitter

Twitter allows you to produce tweets up to 140 characters, where the post can then be shared and re-tweeted or liked, posts

can easily be made viral by continuous re-tweets making it get around. Its also easy to create accounts on Twitter as they can

have their logos displayed and people interested can get involved and follow. Twitter would be a good way of advertising the

production of a film or film opening as you are able to make tweets in order and it has the dates next to it of when it was

posted, there is also a small area to write a description of what they page is for and there to show. It would allow people to

follow the making of it and share the posts to give more people not following us the opportunity to see the posts.

Instagram

Instagram is another social media site that millions of people have on their devices. It is all picture based so all posts would

be images, with an area underneath in which can be used for a title/caption to be added to it and then underneath that

there can be comments made for followers to give their opinions and thoughts. Locations can be added, along with tags on

the image posted, helpful for followers to view and see.

Facebook

Another social media site is Facebook where most people spend their day on meaning guaranteed viewers to see this. On

Facebook films/videos can be directly linked from YouTube etc onto Facebook so this would allow videos to be directly

accessible from Facebook. A page could also be made on here which people can follow and review. Also comment of posts

that have been uploaded.

A successful thriller who advertised through social media was "The Woman In Black". They had mast posts

online about when they're releasing the film etc. They also made massive posters to be displayed on billboards.

There was a lot of marketing taking place online and on social media especially on twitter, Facebook and

Instagram. They also advertised on YouTube and Newspapers. They used as much advertising as they could.

Film Pitch

                              Film Pitch

Our film genre is a thriller/crime. It will be called Paranoia.

We plan on basing our film upon a sudden disappearance of a young girl. It is made to look

like from the shots shown at the very end and the sound effect, she is shot. Minimal amounts of the characters

and sounds are shown in order to build up a crime scene and an unknown story of what 'actually' happened until

the end and that's if you even find out. This is the typical way that thrillers/crimes are gone about as usually the

audience like to go along trying to figure our what happened themselves, as well as picking up clues on the way

to help them out.

The basic outline of the story is the following stages  -

First we see the production logo followed by our own company logo

Then a shot setting the scene

We see the victim collecting hay

Slowly move down the hills getting further away

We see the girls hand opening the electric fence to then walk towards the horse

There is a view from someone elses point of view in the bushes followed by her looking around

She then leaves the horse, closing the fence behind her

the we hear the sound of a gun going off as it show the sky

Followed by the train

The title appears in the sky

Throughout the whole opening there are credits appearing gently onto each scene.

Marking Previous Work

                                Marking previous work

We looked at some previous work from other schools and AS/A-level students who had made film openings. We

looked at three in total. One being 'CAPTIVE', another 'Faceless' and the last one was called 'Rivalry' . The first

two were horror based, which is the same genre as ours will be and the last one was a different genre.

By looking at previous pieces of work showed us some of the standards of different peoples work and how or if

they reached level four when we marked them. Level one was 0-23 marks, 24-35 marks was a level two and

level three was 36-47. All of them was level two and three.

Faceless

The first one we viewed was 'Faceless' which was made by A-level students under the genre of horror. Where

we gave it the following marks -

Material appropriate to target audience - 8/10

Titles conventional/appropriate - 7/10

Sound/images and technical editing - 8/10

Camera work/framing/variety of shot  types/mise en scene - 8/10

Editing for meaning/transitions effects - 8/10

Overall feel - 8/10

Giving it an overall score of 46/60 which would fit into a very high level three, as there is evidence of

proficiency in creative use of technical skills for example producing material appropriate for the audience and

using titles appropriately for the conventions.  It could have included all credits as a few was not shown.

CAPTIVE

The second one we decided to view was also a horror made by a AS student. We marked this piece of work

exactly the same

Material appropriate to target audience - 9/10

Titles conventional/appropriate - 9/10

Sound/images and technical editing - 9/10

Camera work/framing/variety of shot  types/mise en scene - 9/10

Editing for meaning/transitions effects - 9/10

Overall feel - 10/10

We gave this one an overall sore afterwards too, this opening was by far the better of the two as it scored 55/60.

It met all of the technical skills to a high level. They was all met very well and it fitted perfect for the target

audience it was aimed at, however it was still slightly like a trailer which the sound effects, although that was

the only real negative of it.

Rivalry

The last opening we looked at was a different genre to the other two which were horror therefore we knew this

would have a different audience. We marked it on the following this -

Material appropriate to target audience - 7/10

Titles conventional/appropriate - 5/10

Sound/images and technical editing - 4/10

Camera work/framing/variety of shot  types/mise en scene - 6/10

Editing for meaning/transitions effects - 5/10

Overall feel - 6/10

This film opening, overall we scored as a 33/60 which is just over half marks putting it in level two overall. There

was little things that could have been improved, for example the title was too quick, the music didn't fit that well

and it was a little bit boring and repetitive throughout the whole opening.

If we was to list the most effective and was to list them in order of which we prefer the most it would be -

1. CAPTIVE

2. Faceless
3. Rivalry

By looking at these openings we was able to gain experience of the kind of things appearing in these openings

and what other students have included. The first two was very beneficial for us to watch as it is the same genre

as we are going to be using for our two minute film opening. We have seen what marks are graded for specific

things, for our own production these marks will stay with us so we can try to hit the top bands when producing

our opening.

Knowing our audience

Know your audience

      Know your audience

An audience can only be reached if you  understand what they like and want within a film. This is why Psychographic and Demographic is used to help identify what an audience likes.

According to the source 'Collinsdictionary, com' the definition for psychographics is 'the study and classification of people according to their attitudes, aspirations, and other psychological criteria
Psychographic is why a person may like a certain genre of film, this all depends on their buying habits, how much they are willing to spend or their hobbies.

Demographic is more to do with who likes what genre, it normally consists of information such as their age, gender , income, status in society etc.

Our target audience for the opening we are making would be 15- 18 years of age, generally people aged between 15-25 years old watch horrors but we want to specify the age range so that we can focus more on specific things to include within the film opening. Generally young adults and teenagers enjoy a thrill since the mind is experiencing different emotions and moods during this period of their life. A thriller gives them the thrills that some older audiences may not agree with leading to negativity towards the film. Especially if the film contains graphic scenes. Also with a thriller film there isn't too much going on as the young mind does not like to have to overthink. This way they can enjoy the film more. Plus where there are many scare factors involved within a thriller, teenagers will often watch these in groups, which gives them a chance to bond.

Young adults are more drawn into this since they are more desensitised to graphic violence. this is because where the media has developed over the year's children are being exposed to this sort of thing at a young age. So when they see these films as teenagers and young adults it does not bother them because they have grown up seeing this all splashed out on social media and on television. Whereas the older generations have not experienced it at a young age due to lack of exposure from the media, it is only really now that they have started experiencing it.

A film that we analysed was Woman in Black. after doing some research we found that the sort of audience that you would get watching this would be both male and female viewers aged around 25 and under this is because the film is rated at a certificate 12. this suggests that the film was made for younger viewers. Also before the film was created The Woman in Black was originally a novel and stage production so this may suggest that the audience is normally middle class, as most middle class people are stereo typically known to read and see stage productions so this would lead them to watching the film.

After looking at the IMDB reviews the film has received an average of 6.4 stars out of 10 after reviews from the audience were averaged.

BBFC

                                          BBFC

Image result for bbfc ratings

The BBFC is the UK's regulator of film and video and they give ratings

on films. E.g. PG and 18's. They look at the bad language used, the

type of scenes for example shootings or nudity. They then also look

into the story line of what the film involves and how explicit it is to the

      eye,

This is how the BBFC tend to rate films based on the content they

involve. Different genres are judged differently though. The majority of

horror films are labelled as a 15 .

Due to the materials usually used in thriller crimes they're more than

likely set as a 15 if not an 18 if it contains a large amount of gore and

      blood.

Our thriller/crime will be aimed at the most popular age range for horrors,

which is 15 years to 25 years old. However we are going to make it more specific and make it aimed at an

audience of 15 years old to 18 years old meaning we can make sure they're interested in the film we

make, as they're a closer age range. This is the audience we aim to target for the horror film we are going to

     create.

Shown in focus group later on we asked what ages people would rate or think a crime would be aimed at and all

responses gave the age of 15 which is what most horrors that go into the cinema are set at.

- Knifes
- Guns
- Masks

Overall the outcome for this question was that they look mostly for Knifes and Crime/mystery, as it is the

general props used within this genre.

We also had people complete an online survey: Thriller survey

Dark Knight Textual Analysis

Dark knight textual analysis

The most common conventions for all film opening usually all include  introducing the narrative, displaying

the production companytitle, credits and music or theme tune played.

In the Dark Knight there is not a title displayed within the first two minute. As soon as the opening of the film

comes on there is the Warner Brothers displayed with the sound of thunder over the top and then

the Batman  symbol comes on screen and appears (in blue flames) and the audience is can recognise

that this is Batman therefore making it easier for them to identify what the film will be based upon and get a

general feel to how it will be, it also gives the narrative/genre away. It starts off with a bang when the scene of

the tower is shown and it slows zooms in towards the building which puts people on edge especially Americans

due to past events. Followed by a long shot of the city to emphasise the busy American city with still no use of

sounds or any dialogue placed init giving the impression the city is cold and lonely with the people living there

yet also gives an unwelcoming effect that it isn't safe or that something is waiting to go wrong.  In the opening

we are introduced to the character's personality in some kind of way: we are able to gain knowledge from their

first appearance because they are shooting people who have no reason to be harmed in our point of view and

our way of seeing it as an audience. It is known to be unusual that the title and music are both not shown in

the opening of this film as it one of the most key conventions in film openings yet neither of them are brought to

the opening of the two minutes. When the car pulls up for one of the 'jokers' music appears and gives a sound t

track that gives off a ticking sound like a time bomb down to something. There is heavy usage of props, like

guns and masks the whole way through to relate back to the facts their identities are hidden however people are

just in the scene with not as much focus do not have these weapons. Also by all of the clown masked actors

are dressed in the same attire gives off that they are all part of a 'gang' and the same team. The shots used

within the opening are mainly cuts in order to take us through the different steps and places where they are

preparing for the robbery. The only character properly introduced in the opening is known was the 'joker'.

Woman In Black Analysis

Woman in Black analysis

The opening begins with the film company, e one (entertainment one) then the film production Hammer.
The film opens with the use of a mid-two shot of two tea cups and a teapot being poured.
Then cuts to a small child’s hand holding one of the teacups at a dolls mouth, there is also the use of depth of
focus in the scene to help focus on the child’s hand, doll and teacup. The gestures that occur in the scene are sped up  creating the idea that they are manipulating the dolls like they would if it was human. This is then done again but using a different doll. This suggests manipulation and control which often occurs in these sort of films.

The camera then zooms out to reveal three little girls wearing old fashioned dresses of pinks, peaches and white with bows in their hair. This could be suggesting the idea that the three little girls are like the three witches from Macbeth manipulating people, the three little girls are doing the same to their dolls. .They are surrounded by old fashioned dolls and toys, as well as doll limbs laying around. It could be suggested that the dolls supposedly represent a stereotypical thriller aspect. as dolls are often associated with being creepy or daunting.

The lighting is quite dark and the room colours are very dull, with a lullaby piano piece over the top creating an eerie affect. An establishing shot is used to reveal the whole room, including a bed which suggests to the audience that it is a children’s nursery.

At one point the girls all stand up in sync like they’re under some sort of trance and a zoom in used on their feet to reveal the girls smashing the dolls heads as they step over them.
Suggesting the idea that violence is occurring. A long shot is used from behind the girls to show them standing on the window ledge, pulling the window open, then cutting to a close up of the window handle being pulled down and open. The same long shot is then used showing the three girls jump out of the window. Screams can then be heard and the music changes to an eerie whistling sound and a women screaming ‘my baby’. The window is then zoomed out and cuts to a close up of a battered, old fashioned doll, a doll is stereotypical in a horror film as they are associated with being creepy and coming to life. The camera begins to zoom out as though someone is walking backwards out of the room and the scene begins to fade to white to reveal the opening credits, Alliance Films, Hammer, The UK film council and Cross Creek Pictures. The credits are all done over the top of a foggy, cloudy moving images of rings being put on to hands.

Then a set of eyes appear in the white fog, fade and the title, The Woman and Black, appears, disappears and then a montage of the moving images in the white musk continues. This is until it focuses to reveal a man’s face, the main character. After the main character is revealed we see him holding up a blade to his neck as he shaves, this suggests danger or perhaps vulnerability.
